Agra Fort – Architecture, History, Timings and Entry Fees

Agra Fort also known as the ‘Red Fort’ of is located near the gardens of Taj Mahal. It is among the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great built this important monument.

It was the main residence of the emperors till 1638, when the capital of India shifted from Agra to Delhi. This magnificent fort is an ultimate structure of Mughal architecture made of red sandstone and white marble. It was made by not only one but two generations Akbar and late Jahangir and Shah Jahan.

There are two main gates of the fort: “Delhi Gate” and the “Lahore Gate”. The Lahore Gate is also known the “Amar Singh Gate” built after Amar Singh Rathore.

Do you know? The Delhi Gate, facing the city on the western side of the fort is considered as the grandest of all the four gates and a masterpiece of emperor Akbar’s time.

Nonetheless, Sheesh Mahal, the Diwan-i-aam, Diwan-i-khaas, The Anguri Bagh, Khas Mahal, Mina Masjid, Nagina Masjid and Musamman Burj are some important structures that deserve a mention.
